Carmel CAN! is a volunteer initiative launched by Mayor
Brainard, to recognize and coordinate community volunteers. Through
this initiative, citizens looking for volunteer opportunities will be
matched up with those organizations that are in need of volunteers.
Each month, volunteers working at various community events or with
community organizations will be highlighted for their efforts in
making our community a better place to live. Look for volunteer
highlights and updates on Carmel’s monthly news show,
"Connecting with Carmel" on Carmel Government Channel 16,
the Carmel Newsletter, or the Carmel City Website!

SEASONAL OPPORTUNITIES:
Summer

Carmel Farmers Market --
Volunteers are needed on Saturday Mornings to help setup and tear
down vendor booths. Two shifts are available, from 6:30-9:30 a.m.
for setup and 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. for tear down. Volunteers are
also needed to greet visitors at the market. For more information,

Carmelfest -- Volunteers are needed to help with the Carmelfest
Parade, sell Spark Buttons and assist with children’s games for
Carmelfest on July 4th and 5th. For more information, please

Art of Wine – The Arts & Design District office and Art of Wine
event committee are currently seeking volunteers for the upcoming
Art of Wine event on Saturday, June 19, 2010 in the Carmel Arts &
Design District.
Volunteers are needed throughout the day in various areas of the
event, including setup of the festival, wine glass sales and
distribution, information & hospitality and tear down. Volunteer
shifts are available between 10 a.m. and 10 p.m. on the day of the
event.

Rock the District -- The Arts & Design District office is
looking for volunteers - Are you read to rock? Then volunteer
for Carmel’s Rock the District. On July 24th, more than 10,000
people will be rocking out on the streets of Carmel enjoying music,
food, and shopping. Volunteers are needed throughout the day (6am to
10pm) in various areas including Setup, Stage Management,
Information & Hospitality, Runners (Jack of all trades), and
Cleanup. All volunteers receive a free t-shirt and snacks!! Contact

Carmel Artomobilia -- The Arts & Design District office is
looking for volunteers. Join members of the Carmel Artomobilia team
as well as outside groups to help make the day of the event great.
We'll have a single planning meeting the week prior to the event,
and then plan to see everyone at 8am EST on Saturday, September 11,

YEAR ROUND OPPORTUNITIES:
In Carmel -
ALS Association of Indiana -- Provides services for people diagnosed
with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis -- commonly known as Lou Gehrig's
disease -- and their families. The group is seeking volunteers to
assist with office support, computer work, data entry, compiling
thank-you letters, filing and answering the telephone at its office

Carmel Clay Parks & Recreation -- Volunteers are needed
to help support the Parks by helping with Movies in the Park, Kids
Koncerts, Shakespeare in the Park, Touch-a-Truck, Fall Clean-up days
and Tour de Carmel. Volunteer duties vary, and there are a variety
of shifts available. Also, consider joining the Trailblazers Club!
The Trailblazers are ambassadors promoting and maintaining Carmel
Clay Parks and Recreations trails and greenways for the benefit of
the community. The Trailblazers meet periodically with interesting

Carmel Clay Public Library -- Adult volunteers are needed to staff
the "gently used" bookstore in the library. Jobs include operating a
basic cash register, stocking books and helping customers. The store

Carmel Symphony Orchestra League -- The orchestra league is looking
for new members to help support the symphony. Volunteers help with

Clarian North Medical Center -- From giving a warm welcome to
all those who walk through the doors or providing essential support
to the Emergency Department, Volunteers are integral threads in
assisting Clarian North achieve its mission to provide exceptional
care. It's not necessary for prospective volunteers to have previous
healthcare experience; rather an individual only needs a passion to
serve others and a commitment to helping Clarian North make each and
every guest visit positive. Clarian North is currently recruiting
for the following positions:
First Impressions Ambassador: First
Impressions Ambassadors have the important distinction of being
one of the first representatives of Clarian North to greet
visitors and guests. First impressions Ambassadors will leave a
positive, lasting impression with all individuals through
welcoming any who enter the doors with a warm greeting and a
friendly smile. Service hours and days are flexible.
5th Floor Guest Relations Assistant/Bell-Hop: Volunteers
serving as the 5th Floor Guest Relations Assistant will provide
support to the Medical/Surgical and Intensive Care Units by
Provide assisting and supporting all guests who enter into the
5th Floor waiting area. Assistants will personally escort all
visitors and guests to the specific room location of a patient
as well as assist guests and their families in packing up in
preparation for discharge.

Indiana Proactive Animal Welfare Inc. -- Indiana-PAW, an animal
welfare education group is looking for volunteers to become "foster

Meals on Wheels -- Meals on Wheels of Hamilton County needs
businesses and organizations to Adopt-A-Route and allow their
employees volunteer time off during the lunch hour to deliver hot
meals to elderly and homebound residents. This is a great way to
advertise your business to the community with a magnet on your
employee's vehicle that shows they care. Individuals are also
encouraged to volunteer. Delivering meals is a very rewarding
volunteer experience. Meals are delivered between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Museum of Miniature Houses and Other Collections, Inc. -- The Museum
is a not-for-profit organization founded in 1991 by Suzanne Moffett,
Suzanne Landshof and Nancy Lesh that is filled with antique and
modern dollhouses, miniature scenes, hand-crafted miniature art, and
private non-miniature collections. The museum is located at 111 E.
Main Street in Carmel. Volunteers are needed to staff the museum
Wednesday – Saturday from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. and Sunday from 1 p.m. –

Senior Connects -- This student-managed volunteer organization
establishes computer labs and offers computer training to senior
citizens at independent living, assisted living, and other senior
citizen facilities. Senior Connects is now accepting high school
students and extraordinary junior high school students (age 14 or
older) to help teach computer and internet skills to senior
citizens. Teaching times are flexible and at the discretion of the

Agape Therapeutic Riding Center -- A non-profit center for special
needs children and adults, Agape provides horses, equipment,
facilities and helpers for riders with physical, mental or emotional
challenges. Volunteers, age 16 and older, are needed to assist with

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Indiana -- Big Brothers
Big Sisters of Central Indiana -- Big Brothers Big Sisters is in
need of volunteers over the age of 18 to serve as mentors.
Volunteers can pick the day of the week that accommodates their
schedules. Volunteers are needed for both site-based mentoring and
community-based mentoring. Site-based mentoring involves meeting at
a local or other designated sites to eat lunch, working on
academics, or simply spending time together playing games or simply
talking. Community-based mentoring includes helping with home work,
attending sports activities, playing games, and just talking.
Matches meet for one hour per week for one year during the school

Conner Prairie -- Conner Prairie is a large,
open-air living history museum made up of four distinct historic
areas, a modern museum center and over 800 acres of natural beauty.

national center for education and activities exploring the lives,
times and values of the 1800's in America. Conner Prairie volunteer
opportunities are mutually beneficial to the museum and the
volunteer amd we welcome those who would like to donate their time

gardening, museum shop, greeting tour groups, woodworking, sewing,

Easter Seals Crossroads – Parents Night Out – North -- Volunteers
are needed to assist the Easter Seals staff of Parents' Night Out -
North, which provides respite care for family members and primary
caregivers of children with special needs ages six months to twelve
years old. Respite care enhances personal and family health by
providing necessary physical care and recreational activities for
the children while offering parents and caregivers a well-deserved

Hamilton County Humane Society
Hamilton County Humane Society -- The Humane
Society for Hamilton County (HSHC) is a non-profit 501 (c)(3)
charitable organization. It is not a United Way Agency, and is not
affiliated with any other animal welfare group in the United States.
The HSHC also serves as the animal control facility for Hamilton
County, and, as such, receives partial funding from Hamilton County.
The majority of the HSHC budget is funded by private donors. The
HSHC will not euthanize animals for space and time, and will treat
sick and injured animals if there’s an outlook for recovery and a
high quality of life. Many animals are hit-by-car injured,
heartworm-positive, malnourished, or otherwise wounded and/or sick.
The HSHC will provide most of these animals with life-saving
treatments, surgeries and medications as their best chance for a
second chance and until they are re-homed.

patients. Volunteers may be asked to visit, read, talk, knit,

to befriend terminally ill patients and their families. Volunteers
will talk with patients and keep them company, helping to improve

Inspirations of Hamilton County -- Inspirations of Hamilton County,

painters, boutique volunteers, clothing sorters, seamstresses,
cosmetologists, cleaning assistants, beauticians, grant writers,

Age Games -- An exciting civic event is coming to Indianapolis

L. Roudebush VA Medical Center of Indianapolis will host the 2008
National Veterans Golden Age Games! Volunteers are needed to assist
as tour guides, and to help out at competition venues, August 18th
